Chapter 12
A few minutes later we decided to head home. After all, with our prime suspect having completely left the premises, there wasnât very much left for us to do. We made a mental note to ask Ellie Cromwell in a few days if anyone had approached her about her husbandâs share in his business; our best guess for motive right now was that perhaps Llewyn thought he might be able to get a better price from the widow than from the man himself.
âWeâre home, Bee,â I announced when we made our way back into the house. I was expecting her to be a bit annoyed that Jason was here, even though he lived here now, but I figured her desire to eat dinner was going to override her annoyance.
Still, there was absolutely no sign of her.
âBee?â I called out as I opened up the fridge to get some of her food.
âYes?â I heard her reply. I still couldnât see her; I figured she must have been behind some furniture somewhere. At least she was definitely in the house, the voice was coming from the living room.
âWeâre home!â
âYes, I can tell youâve brought the invader back with you.â
âThe invader lives here now, your home has been colonized,â I replied dryly.
âAnd I reserve the right to defend it!â Bee cried as she leapt up from her hiding spot behind the TV and launched across the room toward Jason.
âLook out!â I cried as my catâs body flew through the air, making her way toward my boyfriend. Jason saw her at the last second and ducked while Beeâs trajectory was already set. There was nothing she could do as she flew through the air, through the spot where Jasonâs head had been just a moment earlier.
Bee let out a very un-catlike squeal as she flailed about, desperately trying to get back down to the floor, but failing. Instead, she hit the wall with a solid thud, before sliding down it and onto the ground. Like a typical cat, she landed on her feet and darted away from us, deep into the depths of the house to hide her shame.
I covered my mouth to stifle my laughter as Jason looked at me, a bemused expression on his face.
âI donât think your cat likes me very much,â he finally said.
âShe doesnât like you living here, thereâs a difference,â I replied. âIâm glad you got out of the way.â
âWhere did she go?â
âProbably to sulk. That had to be embarrassing for her.â
âBetter embarrassing for her than painful for me,â Jason said. âIâm glad I donât have to explain to people why my eyes were gouged out.â
âIâll talk to her,â I said.
âCan you reason with cats?â Jason asked. âIâve never had to before.â
âWell, letâs just say dogs are a lot easier,â I replied with a small smile. âBut Iâll give it a shot.â
I made my way down the hallway, trying to figure out exactly where Bee might be hiding. I eventually settled on the laundry closet; she liked to sit on top of the dryer, especially when it was running, and warm.
