Chapter 12

A few minutes later we decided to head home. After all, with our prime suspect having completely left the premises, there wasn’t very much left for us to do. We made a mental note to ask Ellie Cromwell in a few days if anyone had approached her about her husband’s share in his business; our best guess for motive right now was that perhaps Llewyn thought he might be able to get a better price from the widow than from the man himself.

“We’re home, Bee,” I announced when we made our way back into the house. I was expecting her to be a bit annoyed that Jason was here, even though he lived here now, but I figured her desire to eat dinner was going to override her annoyance.

Still, there was absolutely no sign of her.

“Bee?” I called out as I opened up the fridge to get some of her food.

“Yes?” I heard her reply. I still couldn’t see her; I figured she must have been behind some furniture somewhere. At least she was definitely in the house, the voice was coming from the living room.

“We’re home!”

“Yes, I can tell you’ve brought the invader back with you.”

“The invader lives here now, your home has been colonized,” I replied dryly.

“And I reserve the right to defend it!” Bee cried as she leapt up from her hiding spot behind the TV and launched across the room toward Jason.

“Look out!” I cried as my cat’s body flew through the air, making her way toward my boyfriend. Jason saw her at the last second and ducked while Bee’s trajectory was already set. There was nothing she could do as she flew through the air, through the spot where Jason’s head had been just a moment earlier.

Bee let out a very un-catlike squeal as she flailed about, desperately trying to get back down to the floor, but failing. Instead, she hit the wall with a solid thud, before sliding down it and onto the ground. Like a typical cat, she landed on her feet and darted away from us, deep into the depths of the house to hide her shame.

I covered my mouth to stifle my laughter as Jason looked at me, a bemused expression on his face.

“I don’t think your cat likes me very much,” he finally said.

“She doesn’t like you living here, there’s a difference,” I replied. “I’m glad you got out of the way.”

“Where did she go?”

“Probably to sulk. That had to be embarrassing for her.”

“Better embarrassing for her than painful for me,” Jason said. “I’m glad I don’t have to explain to people why my eyes were gouged out.”

“I’ll talk to her,” I said.

“Can you reason with cats?” Jason asked. “I’ve never had to before.”

“Well, let’s just say dogs are a lot easier,” I replied with a small smile. “But I’ll give it a shot.”

I made my way down the hallway, trying to figure out exactly where Bee might be hiding. I eventually settled on the laundry closet; she liked to sit on top of the dryer, especially when it was running, and warm.
